Why Top Talent Isn’t Choosing Your Company
Updated: Aug 14

When providing recruiting consulting to Korean companies in the U.S., there is one statement I hear most often from executives:
“It’s so difficult to find good people.”“We used to have plenty of applicants. Why is it so difficult to find people these days?”“We’ve increased salaries and offer good benefits, but we still aren’t getting applicants.”
But I often ask them in return:
“Can you explain in one minute why the best talent should choose your company?”
Most executives pause for a moment.
Why?
Because many companies prepare the Job Opening, but fail to prepare the Value Proposition—the reason why candidates should choose them.
This is one of the biggest changes in today’s U.S. job market.
In the past, companies chose talent.
Today, top talent chooses companies.
Top Talent Is Not a Job Seeker—They Are an Investor
Top talent does not simply compare salaries.
They think about where to invest their careers.
One top R&D candidate said this during a final interview:
“I’m not looking for a company. I’m choosing where to invest the next 10 years of my career.”
That one sentence captures today’s talent market better than anything else.
Top talent is not simply looking for a job.
They are looking for a platform where they can grow.
Failure Story: “We Pay More, So Why Won’t They Join Us?”
A manufacturing company in New Jersey offered a salary 15% higher than its competitors.
Even so, the finalist chose a competing company.
When asked why after the hiring process, the answer was unexpected:
“The salary was higher, but I couldn’t see what kind of leader I would become three years from now.”
The company was talking about today’s compensation.
The candidate was looking at tomorrow’s possibilities.

Success Story: Why a Small Company Beat a Large Corporation
On the other hand, a mid-sized company with 250 employees competed with a global corporation for the exact same candidate.
The large corporation offered a higher salary.
Yet, the candidate chose the mid-sized company.
The reason was clear.
The CEO personally explained the company’s vision.
They presented a 90-day growth plan for the candidate after joining.
They showed the candidate opportunities to participate in global projects.
They also introduced their mentoring program.
The candidate said:
“It felt like this company wasn’t just trying to hire me. It felt like they wanted to help me grow.”
Top talent invests in potential, not just money.
The Five Things Top Talent Looks for First
First, they look at the leader.
Before they look at the company, they look at their potential manager.
“Is this someone I want to learn from?”
That is one of the most important questions they ask.
Second, they look at growth opportunities.
It’s not just about getting promoted.
They want to know whether they will have opportunities for training, meaningful projects, international experience, and learning new technologies.
Third, they look at company culture.
They research companies through LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Indeed, Reddit, Blind, and other platforms to hear what employees are actually saying.
They often trust employee reviews more than the company’s own promotional materials.
Fourth, they look at the company’s direction.
Is the company growing?
Is it willing to embrace change?
Is it preparing for AI and digital transformation?
These are all questions top candidates consider.
Fifth, they look for meaning.
“What value can the work I do at this company create for the world?”
This question is especially important to Millennials and Gen Z.

4. Candidate Experience
